Rehabilitating fallow land through agroforestry for rural income enhancement
Rehabilitating fallow land through agroforestry for rural income enhancement
Khengrig Namsum Cooperative (KNC) was established as supply chain cooperative on September 9, 2014 with an objective to contribute in improving the livelihood of people living in Zhemang Dzongkhag (District). Zhemgang Dzongkhag (District) is one of the highest poverty prevalence Dzongkhags in the country. The cooperative has dedicatedly worked to deliver farm inputs services, encouraging commercial vegetable production through contractual farming and value adding through processing.
Working in Zhemgang and with farmers for two years, the cooperative observed there were many fallow land in all gewogs (sub-districts) of the Dzongkhag. One of the main causes of leaving land fallow was because of human wildlife conflict, wild animals severely damaged crops hence, discouraging farmers to cultivate. Gradually leaving land fallow resulted in poor soil quality and land became unproductive.
KNC recognized the opportunity to address unproductive fallow land through intercropping technology of growing banana and bamboo together considering their adverse weather resistant and adaptability in poor condition of the soils. Cooperative came up with project idea to establish agro forestry village and they shared informally with all farmers in sub districts. However, only 9 villages showed interest on the idea. Therefore, the cooperative will start with two villages, Thanglajong and Rebati village considering the high prevalence of poverty and proximity to implement and monitor.
Thanglajong has around 80 acres of fallow land at Brumbi and Rebati has around 150 acres of fallow land. The Cooperative have signed lease agreement with land owners/farmers of two villages.
Cooperative with support from GEF Small Grants Programme, aims to reduce poverty enhancing of rural population by rehabilitating the fallow lands through agro-forestry intercropping technologies for sustainable use of fallow land which will convert fallow land to its productivity. The expected results of the project would be contribution to food security through soil fertility improvement of the fallow land, improved livelihood of farmers through self-employment of farmers and contribution to ecology through green space and visual aesthetic.
