Mainstreaming biodiversity conservation on steppe landscape

A main goal of the project consists of improving management and public image of national protected areas in Zaporizhya, Kherson and Donetsk regions among local communities, tourists, and researchers. To accomplish the project goals, the following tasks were planned: to develop surface infrastructure of the National Nature Parks "Meotyda", "Pryazovskyi" and "Dzharulgach"; to promote national parks among local communities through information campaign. Moreover, the project activities involve production, purchase and installation of 32 info-security signs, 22 boundary-security signs, two arches in place of docking and four information boards in three PAs that make up a total area of approximately 100,000 ha. These parks became a habitat for rare species of flora and fauna that are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. 50 trees and bushes were to be planted to strengthen the banks and restore the ecosystem of landscape reserve of local importance "Stepanivka". This reserve is a connecting channel with the Sea of Azov. This area is a habitat for 14 rare species of plants and animals listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Each participant of the project has equal rights and access to the project regardless of gender and age. The project concerns all citizens of Ukraine who are interested in biodiversity reservation. The project aims at attracting as many women, as it?s possible, because women are the most effective carriers and transmitters of information. Besides the project is implemented by a woman.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information component of the project covers at least 500 members of local community. Articles describing all stages of the project will be published at the local and international media. Furthermore, the video on the national parks is created to promote them as attractive places for green trips.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project implementation has socio-economic impact. As three National Nature Parks are to be equipped with informational signs, arches in place of docking and equipment for animal observation. Banks of the Stepanivska spit are to be strengthen. All these measures aim to restore the ecosystem of the area which is a habitat for rare species of plants and animals listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.

Project sustainability

The project insures its sustainability by creating conditions for conservation of biodiversity: there were strengthen the banks of the Stepanivska spit and special equipment for animals monitoring and informing signs were installed at 3 National Natural Parks. All the project?s participants shared their experience with other community members in order to involve more people to preserve nature and rare species.

Project Results

50 trees and bushes were planted to strengthen the banks and restore the ecosystem of the Stepanivska spit. This territory is a settlement for many species of waterfowl, a place of spawning and nourishment of valuable species of fish, a place of growth and residence of 14 rare species of plants and animals that are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.

32 info-security signs, 22 boundary-security signs, 4 information boards were purchased and installed in three National Natural Parks that make up a total area of approximately 100,000 ha.

A tower for observing animals on the territory of the NNP "Dzharulgach" was installed. Also the equipment and materials were purchased for monitoring animals at "Dzharulgach", "Meotida" and "Priazovsky" National Natural Parks.

Several expeditions were carried out thanks to which 3 videos were made about "Dzharulgach", "Meotida" and "Priazovsky" National Natural Parks.

All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conference "Covenant in the Steppe Zone" was held to disseminate scientific research results and recommendations among all target groups.

The miscellany of scientific works of participants of the All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conference "Covenant in the Steppe zone of Ukraine" was published.

1500 booklets about NNP "Dzharulgach", "Meotida" and "Priazovsky" were developed, printed, and disseminated.

10 000 copies of the newspaper "Ekoeden" were printed.

3 environmental lessons and excursions for peoples and students in NNP areas were conducted.
