Biodiversity conservation on steppe landscape with granite extractions

The main project goal is to promote steppe landscapes protection in Zaporizhya region to develop the rural and cycling tourism as well as to involve community to their establishing.
To accomplish the project goals, the following tasks were to be done:
- to develop a cycling route in Zaporizhya region called "Melitopol - Stone graves" involving the estates of green tourism in the area of steppe landscapes in Zaporizhya region;
- to arrange a cycling route in Zaporizhya region called "Melitopol - Stone graves" including the possibility to use the bike transport by people with special needs;
- to promote the natural values of steppe landscapes in Zaporizhya region and facilitate the development of agroecology as well as the green and cycling tourism;
- to conduct an information campaign of the project, including seminars for farms owners, village heads, to create a special website to support route development and maps dissemination, etc.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

Bicycle routes that were developed during realization of the project were authorized by local authorities and included to the list of tourist destinations of the district. Local residents trained through the project are able to share their experience with other community members in order to involve more people to develop green tourism.

Gender Focus

Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results. In addition the project is implemented by a woman.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

It was planned to print brochures with detailed information about the first equipped bicycle routes in the region, with information about green farmsteads. They were to be distributed both among the community and among representatives of business sector, educational establishments, state authorities and local self-government. Seminars on green tourism were to be led.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project should contribute to the sustainable livelihood for the population by creating new cycling routes. They should be developed and equipped in a way that blind people can use them. Also the routes? stopovers involve the households of green tourism. This factor gives a possibility to attract more tourists and respectively to develop green tourism and earn more money.

Project Results

Two cycling routes were developed in Zaporizhya region. They were called "Melitopol city - Stone graves". They are the first ones for the region. These routes were authorized by local authorities and included to the list of tourist destinations of the district. The length of the first eco-route is 36 km, second - 47 km.
The project purchased and donated to local community network organizations 12 trekking bicycles and 4 tandem bicycles for the use of blind people as they can be the second passengers. In addition, the project equipped the routes with road signs, information stands and parking stations for bicycles. All informational products were developed in Braille font.
Project team together with partner-organizations network and local authorities conducted a press conference and approbation of the eco-routes in the framework of the Melitopol City Day celebration. Over 150 citizens participated in the bicycle run.
Project conducted an extensive information dissemination campaign to promote green tourism and agroecology, including seminars for farm owners, village heads, etc. The routes? stopovers involve the households of green tourism in the area of steppe landscapes and recreational zones in protected areas.
As a result, over 600 young people and 120 people with disabilities have a possibility to enjoy eco-routes annually.
Project developed, published and disseminated 600 copies of informational brochure describing cycling routes called "Melitopol city - Stone graves".
10 green rural households have benefited from this initiative due to the double increase of tourists flow. Three green households have received Ukrainian Green Award "100 best green households of Ukraine".
In general, the project is beneficiary for 200 women, 90 representatives of remote communities, 600 young people and 120 persons with disabilities.
