Improving Water Quality in a Micro Watershed in Soufriere

This Planning Grant will help the grantee to determine the baseline conditions of pollution in the Ravine Claire area of the Soufriere Watershed. Preliminary ground water tests have shown that the springs in the area are polluted and action is needed to reverse this condition.
The grantee at this stage in the project cycle will conduct research (primary and secondary) using drone technology and ground truthing; convene meetings and a workshop to engage the community in a process which leads to the establishment of a Community Group; and finally, based on the information gathered and analysed, the grantee will prepare a Full Grant Project Proposal.

By the end of the project the information available will help any group or individual who wishes to replicate this project. This project was the first GEF SGP project in Saint Lucia which used drone technology.

The sustainable impacts of this project will depend on whether the community group is established and the effluents from the pig pens are reduced or at minimum treated.

Project Results

The three main project outputs were: (i) Determination of baselines for water quality in the micro watershed; (ii) Confirmation of the degree of pollution of the springs; and (iii) majority consensus for reducing pollution and addressing the pollution from the piggeries.

Seven persons (4 men and 3 women) were hired during project implementation and earned a total of US$1451 (US$1269 men and US$182 women).

Four persons were trained in areas such as water sampling and water testing using Coliscan Easygel, and two men were trained in using GPS technology.

The final project proposal has four major project activities as follows: (i) Water Quality Monitoring; (ii) Reduction of effluents from two pens; (iii) Ravine Clare River Health Campaign; and (iv) Transformation of two farms from toxic Chemicals to more environmental friendly organic chemicals.
