Transitioning from the use of toxic chemicals to the use of non-toxic organic chemicals (fertilizers and pesticides) through education, research, demonstration and advocacy.
Over the next two years this project will demonstrate how to reduce the use of toxic chemicals in farming and how organic methods can be used to improve the quality of food production in Saint Lucia. The six objectives are as follows: : i) To establish an Organic Farmers Network (OFN) within the Belle Vue Farmers? Co-operative; ) (ii) To establish seven(7) organic farms on seven (7) acres of land by the 24 months of the project; (iii) To establish four (4) organic plots at 4 secondary schools in the south and south-western section of the Island; (iv) To improve the knowledge of farmers, housewives, technical officers, teachers and community leaders on the harmful impacts of the use of toxic chemicals on human life and on the edaphic environment so that they will utilize non-toxic pesticides in the agro-ecosystem on their farms within 24 months; (v) To research and carefully prepare a practical booklet for farmers who wish to transition to organic farming; and (vi) to plan and implement a 3 day National Symposium for local, regional and international farmers and institutions on organic farming and best practices.
The multi-prong strategy in use will include training, research, publications, and the establishment of 11 organic plots (approximately 9 acres).
This demonstration project will help the transition to a higher quality of food production and a healthier environment
