Strengthening Forest Management by Community in Phoutaxan Protected Area
Forest loss and degradation have in recent decades led to a decline in the natural forests in Phongsaly Province, due to continuation of slash-burn cultivation practice because of limited livelihood alternatives and market access. Non-timber forest product (NTFPs), especially medicinal plants, though being one of the important income source for the communities in this area, has been more and more extracted for use and sales without thorough consideration of proper conservation, which putting major common medicinal plants in danger to be extinct in the near future. On the other hand, the living condition and livelihood of the population in the targeted communities is underprivileged as a result of limited availability of agricultural lands, sustainable income sources, poor access roads and communication as well as NTFPs that are gradually decreasing recently. LAB will help to initiating the sustainable forest management in local communities by work closely with the Integrated Nature Conservation and Sustainable Resource Management in the Phoutaxan Provincial Protection Area (PPPA) Project.
