Endangered Fish Species Conservation Project
Lake Bey?hir,the second largest lake of whole Anatolia, is forming Lake Bey?ehir and Catchments Freshwater Key Biodiversity Area (FWKBA) with its large catchment. The FWKBA is triggered with 10 freshwater fish species of international importance. One of these fish is categorized as critically endangered (CR), five as endangered (EN), one as vunerable (VU), one as near threatened (NT) and two are categorized as Data Deficient (DD) according to IUCN?s Red List Criteria. Also it is reported that species categorized as DD have very small areas of occupancies. Foremost threats towards the species are decline in waterand habitat quality, habitat destruction, unwise water management, predation by introduced alien species such as Zander (Sander lucioperca). The aims of the project is forming of a network ? Lake Bey?ehir Local Conservation Group-, increasing of awareness of all relevant parties and preperation of a participatory conservation plan for the threatened species.
