Promoting Sustainable Fishery In The Lake Piso Basin Multiple Sustainable Use Reserve Without Reducing The Protected And Endangered Species To Maintain Their Population
This project proposal responds to an assessment done by WUD in the Lake Piso Basin Multiple Sustainable Use Reserve. The goal of the project is to promote sustainable fishery in the Reserve without reducing the protected and endangered species to maintain their population. The project will create awareness messages among the artisanal fishing community dwellers along the Reserve, build the capacity of cooperative artisanal fishermen by training them selective fishing method and giving them the approved sizes of net, initiate cage fish farming on Lake Piso and turn it over to the community.
The Communities dwellers lack the basic knowledge and education about the importance of protecting these protected species including smaller fishes and their habitats in the project region. Though there are existing Liberian laws and regulations and regulatory bodies protecting and prohibiting the killing of these protected species, there exist hardly any visible action on the part of fishermen to adhere which has resulted in the daily killing of these protected species. Thus this project will target artisanal fishermen and artisanal fishing communities to enlist their participation in the implementation of this project at every stage.
The total cost of the project is about US$40,900, of which US$40,000 represents the donor contribution while WUD, the implementer, will contribute US$900.
Women United for Development is a non-government organization (NGO) based in Monrovia, Montserrado County. WUD?s focuses on public health, the protection of the environment through awareness and sensitization on land degradation and sustainable forest management, as well as empowerment of women and youth through provision of life skills and vocational skills. The Organization is coordinated by a Project Coordinator who is assisted by other staff members.
Our work over the period has focused on the empowerment of women, youth and the elderly in communities who are striving to make life worth living. Our interventions therefore cut across these groups of needy people and endeavor to enhance their efforts toward positive sustainable engagements and livelihood.
