Community based gene plasma bank on local varieties of rice at Labuhan Batu, North Sumatera
Project goal :
To conserve biodiversity of local rice varieties - through reviving traditional practices of rice farming.
Project objective :
1. To collect local rice varieties (in Sumatera) and gather it as gene plasma banks;
2. To collect data and information of each local rice varieties - it?s taxonomy, habitat and planting methods;
3. To select prime quality, high demand rice varieties and reproduce them;
To increase the usage of organic manure and to decrease dependency on inorganic fertilizer and pesticide;
4. To decrease pollution caused by the usage of inorganic fertilizer and pesticide;
5. To involve local community in nature conservation activities;
6. To broaden the area of local rice field, planted by local community.
Activities to be carried out under the project :
1. Preparation.
a) Program socialization, CBO strengthening;
b) Collect local rice varieties;
c) Set up a model;
2. Local training and education in the field.
a) Better land management;
b) Seedling and saplings plant method;
c) Monitoring, evaluation and preserving.
3. Outreach Approach.
a) Dissemination of the succeeded result to other community group;
b) Implementation of the result in the local paddy fields.
4. Technical Assistance.
a) Identification of rice taste, age, method of planting, resistance of pest and disease;
b) Selection method of high quality seeds.
5. Evaluation and Reporting.
