Environment friendly clean energy and technology for Improved livelihood of tribal and poor communities.

The main objective of the project is to demonstrate innovate approaches to enhance livelihood opportunities of poor through sustainable management of watermills in selected project areas.
- To protect, conserve and ensure sustainable use of natural resources and ecosystem services to maintain the livelihoods of the poor.
- Encouraging the installment of improved watermill (IWM) at new sites rather than just improving traditional water mills.
- Establishing quality management system.
- Improve living conditions of the rural households, especially of the traditional water millers and women users.

Project Characteristics and Results

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Activities and results will be published in the local newspaper. Awareness creation will be done regarding Improved water mill (IWM) technology through establishment of orientation and demonstration sites, documentaries, production and distribution of various information, brochures and leaflets.

Policy Impact

Links will be established with Jammu & Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) and subsidy will be accessed. Linked up with Local MLA funds and Local Panchayat and accessing funds of Rs. 18,30,500/-. Letter from MLA is provided in support.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Regular meetings will be organized with the communities to discuss the results or any shortfalls in the project. Awareness camps will be organized in the villages to promote the project and involve the community in the programme. In these camps experts, environmentalist and other Gharat Owners will be called to discuss the benefits of the project and with the villagers.

Capacity - Building Component

Selected trainees will be trained in all the aspects for the successful operation. A three days training camps will be organized where experts will train the villagers on the technical and operational know how of project. Training events will be conducted with potential millers in order to explain the principles and options to upgrade their mills. The interested millers will also be given training on technical aspects of the upgraded watermill so that they can make an informal decision.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The beneficiaries are not indigenous community.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at demonstrating innovative approaches to enhance livelihood opportunities of poor through sustainable management of watermills in selected project areas. The project will provide employment through end use diversification, increased food supply and nutrition. It will improve the living conditions of rural households especially of the traditional water millers and women users. Environmental friendly technologies as water, a renewable source, used thus reducing carbon emission from fossil fuel use.

Gender Focus

Women will be involved equally at all the stages of project activities. The community will be involved in planning, implementing and monitoring of the project activities. The project will reduce drudgery of women and capacity building of women creating employment opportunity. It will improve the mental health by reducing workload of walking long distances carrying heavy load for agro-processing, improving nutrition and affordability to get better child birth services. Purchasing power of the community members will be increased by reduced spending, reduced migration by increasing income from Rs. 3000/- to Rs. 9400/-

Notable Community Participation

Workload of the girls will be reduced resulting in increasing enrollment of girls in schools.

Project Results

- Repair damaged check-dam with the help of community which reduced the vulnerability of natural disaster like flood. Total 10 canal have been constructed to control the water flow.
-Status of Living: Now women of village using water for grinding maize, wheat and rice instead of using hand grinding and traditional watermill which takes too much times and labour.
-With 15 water mills put in full operation, a total of 46,080 KW/year electricity is saved, i.e. 37,786 MTs of CO2 emission is reduced (46,080 x 0.82 per kg). Against the target of 15, we completed 17 water mills. This will reduce additional CO2 emission of 5,020 MTs. Water mill turbine are purchased from HESCO Uttarakhand
- More than 100 hectares of land is brought under improved irrigation by channeling the discharged water systematically.
- On an average, the income of 52 families has been increased from Rs.3,000 to Rs.9,400 per month, thus helping in reducing migration to urban areas.
- 13,800 days of food shortage has been reduced by providing employment to 52 persons (3 persons per water mills, on an 8 hourly rotation basis) and by providing economically priced food grains to the villagers.
