Promotion of solar energy powered back yard poultry by the poor women for sustainable livelihood

The project aims to set up backyard poultry units with solar PV- based lighting system. Each poultry unit will consist of 30 birds and an area of 50 sq. ft planned for each unit. The project area will be 10 villages and 30 SHGs to be formed with 10 members in each SHG who have small scale back yard poultry farming for better performance. There will be an allocation for revolving fund for poultry farming to 300 members of these SHGs on a rotational basis of 11 cycles. The project will reduce the emission of CO2 by use of alternative energy efficient and renewable solar energy.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

385 SHG members will be provided with skill development and management training on backyard poultry and solar PV-based lighting and ventilation system. Capacity building of all 300 members will be done on food preparation training for the birds. Local communities will be trained regarding skills to increase adaptive capacity for sharing decisions in SHGs, sharing costs and taking responsibility. Capacity building of the women will be done regarding the use of renewable solar energy and environment protection aspects, enterprise development aspects, land use practices etc.

Gender Focus

Community participation will be right from the planning stage of the project. The project intervention aims at the women in a rural belt of the coastal Odisha (which is mainly male focused in general). Women will be empowered to participate in decision making process related to agriculture. The backyard poultry units will be managed by the women and they will be provided with Solar PV based lighting and ventilation support as well as interest free loan for poultry units. The project will form/strengthen 35 Women SHGs in the project villages and they will be trained and hand holding will be done for backyard poultry. A federation of the SHGs will be formed for trading the meat towards the end of the project. All the decisions regarding activity implementation, monitoring and evaluation will be carried out by the SHGs.

Notable Community Participation

Local youth will be trained to meet the immediate need of repairing the solar system.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The baseline survey will be done at the beginning of the project followed by a village micro plan for each of the 10 core villages. Meetings will be organized in the villages involving all the stakeholders. Bi-monthly review meetings will be conducted and the decisions will be documented.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The beneficiaries are not indigenous community.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at setting up backyard poultry units with solar PV- based lighting system. The poultry business will act as a source of income for the families while the secondary benefit will be improved soil conditions of the lands by use of droppings as manure will improve their kitchen farms by providing them nutritious food and more business in terms of selling of the crops grown. CO2 emission will be reduced by around 24243 kg or 31 MT per year by using 9W LED solar power lights. Necessary insurance policy will be made to cover the loss in case of disaster. The concept of interest free loan in the form of revolving funds will be introduced.

Policy Impact

The project proposes to establish partnership with MNRE/OREDA for support towards Solar PV based lighting and ventilation system for the backyard poultries. The Renewable Energy component will be supported under the RE based livelihood scheme of the MNRE, Govt. of India.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project will be highlighted through promotion of a special page on Facebook. The activities thus implemented in the field will be uploaded on the page so as to reach other stakeholders. Print & electronic media will be integrated during different activities to ensure a wider reach. The success stories will be published in their annual report and circulated to different stakeholders and partners for dissemination of the learning from the project.

Project Results

? Solar systems have already been installed as per the guideline light & ventilator in all the 74 poultry sheds. The CO2 emission reduction will be approx 19 Mt.
? Now 192 beneficiaries in 9 SHGs have started their own backyard poultry. The SHG members have 2880 birds with them in their poultry sheds.
