Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The project will empower local entrepreneurs through the implementation of sustainable electricity for sustainable livelihoods. The target area had never had any kind of access to electricity and the NGO plans to implement green electricity for the village in association with Gram Oorja Pvt Ltd. and German based Smart Hydro Power GmbH. On an average 17,000/-rupees net profit, extra income will be earned by the family every month. 20 bio gas units will be build for poor tribal/rural beneficiaries. Measure of quantity of Greenhouse gas emission will be reduced. The project will improve the cash income earnings by creating an entrepreneurial atmosphere thus limiting the migration process to neighboring cities and villagers for employment. It will encourage the utilization of electricity for productive use and on improving energy availability to the end users by implementing a hybrid renewable power plant guaranteeing CO2 free sustainable development. Women and children will benefit largely and directly as cleaner fuel will ensure reduced respiratory diseases in the households. Reduction in use of fossil fuels i.e. nearly 1500 liters of kerosene per year and 12 kg wood per household per day will be replaced.
Notable Community Participation
The project will help in increasing the number of students (both boys and girls) enrolled in schools and have access to the facilities equally.
Policy Impact
The stakeholders will help to identify relevant solutions, ensure good management and transparency and smooth project implementation. This project has the potential to be replicated across 40 villages (1000 households approx.) in Joida taluka, and can be used as a demonstration project to encourage the villagers in un-electrified areas in Karnataka to switch to cleaner energy sources. Similar project can be also implemented across off-grid villages in various parts of India.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Time to time review will be conducted to rectify the problem raised during project implementation. Village committee will be formed for tariff collection, operation and maintenance. Baseline surveys will be done before commencing the project. Village Energy Committee (VEC) - (Shree Mahalasa Seva Trust) will be formed with selected villagers.
Project Results
* The project demonstrated the economic viability of the hybrid Hydro-PV systems for off-grid rural households in the village of Bhamane.
*1 unit of Hybrid power system -Micro Hydro power (Less than 100 kW) and 5.04 kWp solar PV cells for decentralized electrification established. All the households in Bhamane are now electrified with 24x7 electricity allowing them to work longer hours and also engage in other productive activities
* 200 community members are a part of the deployment of RE which is saving 4.4 tonnes CO2/year. Reduction in the use of kerosene and firewood also has also helped in reducing the CO2 emissions in the village.
* Working with Gram Oorja and a German company ? Smart Hydro Power for the project and they have got co financing from the German partner too.
* Electricity access to 2 schools has encouraged student participation and children are now able to study after dark.
* The women of the tribes are involved in making bamboo mats to enhance their income.
