Demonstrating sustainable multi-stakeholder and landscape ecology based approach to conservation beyond protected areas - Conservation of harriers around the Velavadar Black Buck National Park.
The project aims at evolving and demonstrating a multi-stakeholder landscape ecology approach based conservation and sustainable development beyond VBBNP. The project will target about 4000ha farmland of about 700 households in five villages namely Velavadar, Motidharai and Rajgadh & Mithapar of Bhavnagar Taluka. Under this project sustainable farming tending towards organic farming and nature conservation will be promoted through education, awareness program, technical guidance, capacity building and demonstration providing input kits and marketing support.
The project will target harrier conservation through research, education and awareness, habitat development and supporting core roosting sites of harriers i.e. Velavadar National Park.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
Capacity building of farmers will be done for sustainable farming. Awareness will be created about importance of harriers and other birds in agriculture ecology and promoting sustainable agriculture gradually progressing towards organic farming. Orientation, training and capacity building for organic farming using different methods- IEC school and exposure visits.
Gender Focus
In the farmland both men and women of the family/ household will work together. Female members of the family/ household will participate in a family level discussion for decision making. Women at community level will be organized into sakhi mandals, mahila mandals etc. Communities consisting farmers will be organized in to village level organizations namely FIGs. They will be actively involved in farmland activities with dual objectives a) sustainable farming for enhancing their livelihood and b) biodiversity conservation through ecological/organic farming. Farmers Interest Groups (FIGs) will be formed, minimum 2 female members will be involved in the group. Female farmers will be encouraged to participate in all the activities of capacity building. Every effort will be made to involve women, build their skills in sustainable farming practices and ensure their skilled participation in sustainable livelihood discussions.
