Community Led Renewable Energy Systems and Approaches for Sustainable Livelihoods by Establishing Biomass Pellet Units and Cook Stoves in Puri District of Odisha.

The project operated on 10 core villages in 3 panchayats of Gop block of Puri district. The project is related to bio energy. Under this the organization will be producing bio mass pellets fuel and will promote the use of biomass cook stove. The objective is to develop and deploy improved biomass cook stoves for providing cleaner cooking energy solutions in rural, semi-urban and urban areas using biomass as fuel for cooking there by saving on burning of wood. Climate change will be mitigated by reducing black carbon and other emissions resulting from burning biomass for cooking. The pellets will be used at dhabas for emitting high energy black carbon that not only provides greater quantity of heat but also provides it for a longer time. It will help in reducing the drudgery of women and children using the traditional chulha (cookstoves) for cooking.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

2 workshops and demonstration for will be conducted for the beneficiaries, technical persons and manufacturer/ supplier. Village level committee will be set up for enterprise development and management to look after all the issues related to the energy unit and its governance. Special promotional programmes will be arranged at weekly haat, various yatras, SHG member meetings, government and other organization programme for promotion of improved stoves. Continuous monitoring mechanism will be developed and MIS system will be established.

Gender Focus

The program will be implemented by the local community. The project will involve local SHGs in forward linkage of product chain to increase livelihood and explore new income generation activity. 600 beneficiaries will be identified for the promotion of biomass cook stove for small business like dhabas, anganwadis, school for mid day meals. Demonstration will be done by village women to build in the necessary confidence in them to use the cook stoves. 10 women SHGs will be formed and linked to banks to access credit. Village volunteers will be selected for taking exposure regarding the technologies, capacity building in operation, maintenance and management operations of the unit.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at developing and deploying improved biomass pellet based cook-stoves for providing cleaner cooking energy solutions as a renewable energy base in small Hotels, Anganwadis, schools etc. as well as Individual Households in rural and semi urban areas in Puri. The project will set up an enterprise based model/business model to reduce health hazards from biomass burning by providing feasible and doable alternative of improved stoves. 2 biomass pallets will be established in the production centres for supplying fuel for the cook stoves.

Policy Impact

The project will establish partnership with MNRE/OREDA for support towards Biomass Pellet Production centres and supplying subsidized pellet based cook stoves. Links will also be formed with MNRE?s Renewable Energy based rural livelihood project scheme for promoting the cook stoves. The project will be initiated by the Panchayat SHG federation and forest committee formed under Joint Forest Management Program. Collaboration will be done with research organizations to come out with research publications of the efforts.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project will highlight the activities through promotion of a special page on facebook. Print and electronic media will be integrated during different activities to ensure a wider reach. The success stories will be published in the annual report and circulated to different stakeholders and partners for disseminated of learning from the project. Brochures will be made on biomass pallet and cook stove.

Capacity - Building Component

Trainings will be organized for women to make them aware regarding the usage of improved pellet based stoves for cooking purposes. Training and capacity building will be done for the staff and the communities. 10 artisans will be trained on production and 10 people from the staff will be trained on promotion, monitoring of account. 2 exposure visits to Pune Gangotree ltd. will be organized for 20 women.

Project Results

* More than 550 households have been given cook stoves in 14 villages and the communities have contributed 50 % cost sharing (Rs1100 each). One family would reduce burning of 3500 KG firewood per year saving around 5 MT of CO2 emissions after considering the emission in production of 1750 KG pellets replacing the above wood. Setting up 750 Individual cook stoves will save around 3750 MT of CO2 every year.
* 1350 hectares of indigenous and community conserved areas has been protected.
* Biomass pellets are eco friendly and renewable energy fuel having a high calorific value around 3800Kcal/kg - 4400 Kcal/Kg. Low ash content of about 2-5% and absence of sulphur of any other hazardous material makes it more convenient in use.
* Pelleting plant will provide direct and indirect employment to unskilled youth in the villages. Creates an entrepreneurial model at the village levels and urban slums within communities. The payback period for investment on the pelleting plant is 2-3 years. Non -Government Organizations can procure the machines and set up local village committees to run them.
