The project will prevent adverse effects from mercury toxicity by fighting covert use of mercury and engaging local residents in the monitoring activities. It will train instructors and produce a manual containing information on the following:
- Basic information about mercury, the sources and symptoms of mercury poisoning, the minamata disease, mercury contamination of food and examples of mercury poisoning;
- Products and waste that contain mercury /the range of products that contain mercury, loss of mercury from products, storage of waste containing mercury and collection of hazardous waste/;
- Artisanal gold mining and use of mercury in artisanal mining, prevention of its toxic effects, as well as the importance of citizens? responsibility, partcipation and collective monitoring.
