Climate-friendly sustainable agriculture for enhancement of income of tribal communities of Ladakh.

The project will ensure just production of chemical free and environment friendly agro based food products that use bio manure, solar drying and other waste reducing practices. Farmers will be trained in financial literacy and digital empowerment that leads to a 20% increase in access to micro finance for investment in enhanced agricultural productivity. The project will help in reducing food wastage and environmental degradation by providing effective market links to farmers that will be help them in earning a steady and sustainable livelihood.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

E-commerce activities will be set up and people will be trained with the operating system of PAYTM, paying and accepting payments through phone and internet banking. The villagers will be encouraged to participate in food festivals, exhibitions, organic fairs in the country. They will conduct farmer?s market in urban cities for marketing purposes by the NGO?s team. Demo models of organic culture will be created by sustainable agriculture and local food. Tie ups with more stores, food chains, online market places will be facilitated. People will be connected with several restaurants, neighbor- hood stores and online market places after packaging the products in recyclable paper pouches along with mentioning their nutritive value.

Policy Impact

Linking with several government plans such as UNNAT BHARAT, Mahila Anna swaraj that engage in gender mainstreaming with sustainable agriculture in India will be developed. Certifications for organic products will be ensured from organizations such as Indocert, Ecocert, NPOP, APEDA, and USFDA. Replication will envisage through timely documentation for which they will soon be on Platformax i.e. a digital customer relation service that will help in improving the documentation.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Gender Focus

The community as a whole will be participating in the project. The men will be involved in quality check, drying, bagging and transportation, the women whereas will be involved in making manure, sorting and grading nuts and cold milling of oils. Women will be employed in planning, monitoring, digitizing, formation of SHGs to ensure dignity of work and better wages. A woman farmer will be sent to Sweden to train her in bio manure and its production. Community organized field worker will execute the project in the villages and carry out field monitoring for which a field organizer will be appointed. Women will be involved in formation of Self Help Group to ensure dignity of work and better wages. The community will be familiarized with banking systems, digital systems will lead to a 30% increase in access to micro finance for enhanced agricultural productivity.

Capacity - Building Component

The primary objective at the grass root level will be capacity building initiatives to upstream benefits. Over 650 farmers (80%) women will be trained on skills such as smart water management, use of bio manure, composting, replacing use of chemicals to demonstrate renewable energy for solar drying and low cost preservation in Tamakchik, Ladakh. Farmers will be trained in financial literacy and digital empowerment that will lead to a 30% increase in access to micro finance for investments in enhanced agricultural productivity. Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at reducing food waste and environmental degradation by providing effective market links to the farmers to enable them to earn a steady and sustainable livelihood. Villages will be provided with 50 smokeless cook stoves approved by the scientists of IIT Bangalore to reduce the usage of firewood, provide them with health and hygiene. They will provide a pipe that will reduce CO2 emission. The improvement in productivity has led to increased food availability and improved nutrition through diverse healthier foods. Local nutrition reduces the reliance on food relief program making them self sufficient. Increase in income will have other developmental benefits at the household level such as paying school fees, familiarize with banks and banking system, improving education and interaction with urban Indian folk. The market places will take a significant margin to distribute the agro based products. Organic sustainable agriculture will remove 7000 pounds of CO2 emission per acre per year.

Notable Community Participation

The project will help in empowering the marginalized groups such as women and youth and seek their participation in decision making. Local youth or community field organizers will be appointed to communicate everything regularly via E-mail, update task sheets and attend the phone calls to clarify the query of the local?s.

This may make some more months to influence the policy. However the the villages passed resolution to stop the usage of chemical fertilizer and polythene bags

Project sustainability

VISHWA DEEP TRUST has formed one Women Self Help Groups and trained on food processing marketing etc. It is expected that the SHG will take up the project project activities

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Website will be developed along with payment gateway and coupons will be provided for online marketing. Social media campaign, CRM with platformax will be done. Flyers and brochures will be prepared and disseminated.

Project Results

? Produced 18 tons organic apricots which are rich in many plant antioxidants and a great source of vitamin C. 80% of revenue generation in this village is through organic apricots.
? Distributed 67 cook stoves to the households in Takmachik village in the Leh district of J&K due to which 318 mt of CO2 emission reduction has been done.
? 30 wooden and portable solar dryers have been distributed to the farmers for effective post harvesting management. These dryers are meshed with linseed oil to fight infestation; they are airy and have food grade nets for effective post harvest management. The solar dryers are reducing 436 kgs of carbon emissions over 8 months. (50% community contribution).
? Received the partnership of Govt. of Estonia , UNCTAD E- residency enrolment program that gives them access and permit to sell online Internationally especially in Scandinavia.
? Linked with flipkart, amazon and big basket for selling their products online.
? Participated in Green haat organized by Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and CEE at the Paryayvaran bhawan and Rajghat, Italian cultural centre, French fete charity mela. Given several talks and speeches on women entrepreneurship and social work aimed at climate change with young students of Ashoka University. Participated in Delhi Vegan festival and showcased their sustainability project with Union Minister of women and child development at the Woman of India Organic Products Festival wherein their farmers also came from Takmakchik.
? Initiated eco toy making with the villagers in winters as an indoor activity since October onwards there is snowfall and hardly any agricultural activities are carried out. The toys use local yak wool and an American needle that involves rigorous follow ups with the local company that manufactures it.
