Renewable energy as temporary back-up electricity for critical infrastructure in 4 health centers in Albania
The Albanian state healthcare system is divided into three tiers of service. Outside of the towns and cities, medical care is provided by health centers, which are owned by the countries local governments. The health centers provide maternity care, child health services and immunizations. The Ministry of Health is starting to build more health centers with financial assistance from ECHO, the World Bank and the German Government.
Each health center is equipped with some colds storage facility / fridges for storing temperature sensitive medicaments and/or vaccines. The reliability of the electricity supply is still not good and it is not uncommon for these centers to experience several hours of interruption of electricity. Electricity backup systems are essential in these settings.
In this project, SGP is pairing with HAP (Health for All). The project ?Health for All Programme? financed by SDC and implemented by the Swiss TPH in collaboration with the Terres des hommes and Save the Children.
In this project, HAP will undertake the refurbishment of 4 health centers including thermal insulation and solar water heating, while SGP will cover the cost of 4 photovoltaic supplied battery banks that are able to provide electricity for periods of time to the fridges and lighting.
