"Establishment of Fruit Processing and Fruit Drying Workshop for Women Society of Muminobod districts" in Muminobod district, Khatlon province.
Muminobod district is the largest district in Khatlon region and the total number of population is equal to 90,000 people. Moreover, the district is rich with arable lands and pastures where majority people are engaged with agriculture, horticulture and livestock breeding. There are various fruits and vegetables are produced in Muminobod district. Majority fruits grown are apple, cherry, grapes, nuts and more than 20 varieties of other decorative and fruit trees. Hundred thousand tons of fruits and vegetables are produced annually in Muminobod district for district market use and the surplus are realizing in other adjacent districts of Kulob area. Prolonged economic crisis and lack of financial resources particularly in the rural areas do not allow the private entrepreneurs and local farmers to establish small Workshops for reproduction of the fruits and vegetables in the local level. There is a great potential but start-up capital fund is essential. Transportation of fruits to other districts markets and, or workshops are very high, and yet existing workshops are buying the fruits from local farmers at a very low price that do not cover the basic expenses of the local farmers, and thus around 30% -40% of the agricultural production are lost annually in Muminobod district This indeed decrease the financial motivation of the local farmers and thus reduces agriculture crops and fruits production. The NGO Zan va Oila is therefore proposed a project to establish a local workshop for fruits reproduction and drying using the best available technologies (BAT) that does not require huge investments, plus it will be demonstrational for local farmers and private entrepreneurs particularly women entrepreneurships. Establishing a local workshop in Muminobod district will also tackle complex of issues, including local economy, improving livelihoods, income-generating and employment, as well as local market development.
The general goal of the project is to introduce and to promote effective and efficient use of natural resources particularly fruits, hawthorn, pear, barberry, cheery, apple, dog-rose. Most of the fruits are wild-growing species and considered local biodiversity. Provision of innovative skills and self-employment for rural women of Muminobod district through establishment of fruit processing and fruit drying workshop is primarily goal of the project. The local workshop enables rural women to produce fruit cans, juices, jams, as well as dried fruit packages, thereby ensuring income-generating for female headed households (FHH) and effective use of local biodiversity.
