“Building of Cellar facilities for storage of fruits and vegetables (orchard fruits and potato) in mountain areas of Lyakhsh district"
“Building of Cellar facilities for storage of fruits and vegetables (orchard fruits and potato) in mountain areas of Lyakhsh district"
Lyaksh district is one of the remotest districts of Tajikistan, locating at the border with Kyrgyzstan. The district is located at 300km distance from capacity city Dushanbe. Majority people in Lyakhsh district are engaged with agriculture crop production and livestock breeding. The main agnculture product in this mountain area is potato. The potato are procured by local and national private entrepreneurs and sold at the local and republican markets. Due to lack of storage facilities at the household levels as well as shortage of knowledge on innovative/ alternative storage technologies the local farmers and potato producers are enforced to sale their products at the very low gate price that do not cover their basic expenses. Hundred thousand tons of potato and fruits are produced annually in the district, where the storage is an issue. Damage and loss of the agnculture crops is comparatively high due to lack of technologies and facilities to proper store and eventually realize the foodstuff at reasonable price, while the price for the product will get higher. Proper storage and accumulation of the agriculture food crops and fruits would enable local farmers to increase their family income and improve their livelihoods, thereby contributing to the protection of environment and effective use of biodiversity in the local level. This project would also demonstrate and widespread best available technologies and techniques for storage of agriculture food crops and fruits. The project has great potential for scaling-up and replication amongst local farmers and food crop producers as it is easy to use and would not require substantial investments to build storage facilities.
