Go Green Ahmadshah Baba Project in Kabul City

Go Green Ahmad Shah Baba Mena Project in Kabul is focusing on the the community based urban plantation and establishment of community network for environment protection. The project will reduce the air pollution and dust in the area. It will also help to increase the awareness of local people and promote the culture of plantation and greenery among urban dwellers in the target location.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

After a number of meetings with local elders and Shura, ABCO representatives along with local influential elders conducted consultations in local schools and in Mosques to promote public awareness. Also, they have been encouraged to participate in the campaign of plantation in the targeted area.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

As a part of the project, some activities have been carried out to support the livelihood of local people. Around 40 vulnerable people have been hired for more than 30 days as labor to level the targeted area, prepared the area for plantation and plant the saplings. In addition, five local persons have been hired for long term to regularly irrigate the planted trees and do the maintenance of the irrigation infrastructures.

Project sustainability

Project handed over to district municipality and community. They are take care of the planted saplings.

Policy Impact

Since Go Green Ahmad Shah Baba Mena Project in Kabul is about the plantation of 5000 saplings and their maintenance for two years, the look of the targeted area has been changed. Now it looks green and cleaned. Local people has been engaged in the process to earn their livings for some time.

Capacity - Building Component

The capacity needs of the grantee based on the capacity assessment is: 1. Having an experienced management team to execute the Activities plan properly. 2. Having an experienced agricultural specialist. A capacity building training is conducted as part of the grant regarding the plantation and maintenance of the trees for 40 Persons.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The communications strategy of the project to promote public awareness is: 1. Consultation with local influential elders and shura 2. Inauguration ceremony in the target area and invitations of local residence to the ceremony. 3. Printing banners. 4. Celebration of international Environmental Days

Notable Community Participation

Were involved to support the implementation process of the project. Youth from schools and residents of the target area, who were introduced by Shura, played a vital role in the execution of the activity plans.

Gender Focus

With the implementation of Go Green Ahmad Shah Baba Mena Project in Kabul all the residents of Section 9 of Ahmad Shah Baba Mena are benefited in terms of having the green environment and low-carbon air to breath. The role of local both men and women are vital in the project. As ABCO are already in close contact with local residents, shura schools teacher both male and female they are keen to promote public awareness in various group of the residents of targeted area such as students and youth.

Project Results

The project ?Go Green Ahmad Shah Baba Mena? was implemented in District 12 of Kabul City. Once Kabul was one of the most beautiful cities of Afghanistan, but, unfortunately is now so dirty and over populated. Over 5 million people are living in Kabul. There are huge environmental issues in Kabul. The Air pollution in the city is huge due to unpaved roads, lack of greenery, dust, transport etc., and there is huge waste.

Under this project, around 5,000 saplings planted with community led approach on over 5 hectares of land. Two water reservoirs constructed, and two solar water pumps installed to pump the water for irrigation of saplings. With the implementation of the project the areas where there were huge heaps of waste was cleaned. The project raised the awareness of the of around 8,000 community members (61 male and 39% female) on environment. Youth were involved in the campaign on cleaning and greening the area. The religious scholars ?Mulla?s? were motivated and they called on people from the Mosques to plant trees, protect environment by not using the plastic bags, and waste management. There have been considerable changes in the area after the implementation of the project. Apart from the trees planted with the project support, huge plantation carried out as a result of the awareness campaigns conducted in the area.
