According to our gender policy, we are committed to develop the participation of women in both levels of employment and voluntary initiatives by +20% of the participants. For this reason, 3 out of 7 paid staff (including the program manager) of our organization are female. There are also 54 out of 200 volunteer female members in Environment Preservation High Committee which clearly exposes our efforts to consider the gender issue in our project activities.
Environment Protection High Committee is established in the line of Afghan laws and policies, specifically according to the requirement of Youth National Policy of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
Capacity - Building Component
First of all, as a voluntary based network, RSCO has been working with dozens of environmentalist voluneers in last 3 years. However, they hadn't been trained enough on basics of the environment so far. We highly needed the related calacity building for our previous and new volunteers. This project, in one hand helped us to develop an organized platform for our volunteers (Environmental Preservation High Committee) while on the other hand gave us the opportunity to organize four one-week workshops on related capacity needs of the volunteers including an introduction to sustainalbe development goals, climate change/action/ justice concepts, environmental laws and policies, green advocacy tools, etc. This project prjvided the chance to train around 200 volunteer members of the committee with the neccessary knowledge and skills for better advocating toward environment preservation.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
In the Capacity Building Phase of this project, we have invited around a dozen of environmental experts and activists to facilitate lectures for EPHC members. In this process, our members and staff promoted their environmental knowledge and received various educational resources from lecturers including books and presentations. On the other hand, the gained knowledge is supposed to help us to facilitate the training workshops by EPHC volunteers for school students which exactly lead us to the strategy of knowledge circulation and sharing. Besides, publishing the Voice of Earth Bimonthly is another platform to share the environmental knowledge in the society.
Policy Impact
Not in particular. However, we have our activity based, annual and overall evaluation processes in which our volunteers, school partners and government stakeholders will clearly evaluate our policies and activities.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
So far we have led a wide planting campaign including one street and 7 school planting campaigns which have been done by the help of indigenous people in where the campaigns were held. One of the main goals of this project is to involve the local people in voluntary green initiatives. We follow the objective in two main missions: first, including youth volunteers in Environment Preservation High Committee (EPHC), and second, working on elementary and secondary schools in order to increase the participation of school teenagers in green initiative and institutionalize the culture of environmentalism. So far, we are accomplished the first mission, since we already recruited 200 youth volunteers in EPHC. Through the committee we produced and broadcasted various video clips and green messages in social networks, and participated in media discussions in order to promote the environmental awareness of our people.
Project sustainability
The Environment Preservation High Committee as the main achievment of this project is a voluntary based platform toward green initiatives. The committee will sustainably contribute in environmental activities under the management of RSCO. The staff and employees of RSCO will also continue their support to this committee after cutting the salaries at the end of first year of the project. Therefore, this project has been designed to advocate for environment sustainably.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The main purpose of this project is to engage more youth volunteers in green initiatives in a sustainable platform. Therefore, this project hasn?t been designed to address the socio-economic livelihood activities directly. However, the training programs in one hand and the networking and advocacy processes on the other hand especially focuses to present alternatives for a green socio-economic change. In the bilateral meetings of the Environmental Preservation High Committee with related stakeholder organizations, this has been one of our main subjects to advocate about. Besides, we will consider the point in our future activities at schools, academic centers, media and overall society.
Replication of project activities
The project activities mainly focused on voluntary advocacy toward conservation of the environment. Therefore, the project activities has the potential and capability to be replicated and promoted in duration of the time.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
There are several tools predicted in our communication strategy to raise the public awareness dividing mainly into direct and indirect tools. Our direct tools consist the face to face awareness raising activities. In this stage, we first organized four one-week inclusive workshops to develop the capacity of EPHC volunteers. Our volunteers, as the representatives of a green change, are responsible to spread the environmental awareness in the society, particularly at schools. The indirect tools contain many awareness raising tools including The Voice of Earth Bimonthly Magazine, social networks and public media, through which our green messages are circulated in the society.
Notable Community Participation
This project is a youth-organized and youth-led project. According to the title of the project (Sustainable Environment Conservation through Youth Leaders), the project aims to develop a platform for youths to engage in environmental initiatives. All of the volunteers in this project are among youth. Besides, the project is run by youth employees who are very motivated toward a green change in the society.
