Revival of camel and sheep wool value chain with pastoral craft skills

The project aims to study and understand the pastoral crafts, skills to process the local resources in order to fill gaps to make them ecologically sustainable and to revive linkages and relations between artisans and pastoral communities for mutual benefits and supporting biodiversity by reducing carbon footprints. The project will introduce new form of suitable technologies for spinning, carding and combing for wool processing. The project will enhance income level of artisans and pastoral communities for mutual benefits by generating more value for their work.

Project Characteristics and Results

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Documentation, publication and documentary regarding the project activities will be created for a wider dissemination. The project activities will also be documented in terms of reports and photographs. The relevant publications will be published in the form of written, audio and video publications to disseminate the project learning in wider forms.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Groups of community will be identified to organize the wool collection process.Time to time stakeholder meetings will be conducted. Evaluations will be conducted as planned to analyse the progress of the project activities.

Project sustainability

Once the basic functions of the project are established on the ground, there is a lot of potential in the project to sustain itself. There is a high demand of natural fibers like wool in the market, so the project will be able to sustain itself once market linkages are established.

Policy Impact

Replication will envisage in the places like Saurashtra, North Gujarat and Rajasthan with substantial population of sheep, goat and camels. Social Security program supported artisan in getting health insurance, social security cards and provide linkages with the government schemes.

The beneficiaries are not indigenous community.

Gender Focus

The community as a whole will be participating in the project. The women members of the pastoral communities will be core participants and beneficiaries. Women spinners will be given priority for income generation activities which will help them in reviving their skills and save money. Community participation in the project activities will ensure that their indigenous knowledge regarding sheep, goat and camel breeds, quality of wool, shearing processes etc will form basis of the knowledge system.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at studying and understanding the pastoral crafts, skills to process the local resources in order to make them ecologically sustainable. The project will revive local craft skills of spinning and weaving by making them more suitable with camel and sheep wool processing. They will be able to generate revenue of 7 lakh and they will easily turn this into a business model with revenue generation of 1 crore in the next 5 years. Appropriate technology will be introduced to support and organize craft skill to achieve critical scale of operations. Income level of artisans and pastoral communities will be enhanced for mutual benefits by generating more value for their work. The project will enable the region to maintain the traditional practice of sheep breeding for wool as well as revive all the wool crafts of the region for better livelihoods of the communities.

Policy Influence

Through the project, the community people managed to talk with all the Government agencies ? central to state level and explain them that there is a lot of hope in revitalization of development of sheep wool value chain by empowering local communities.

Capacity - Building Component

Training, exposure and capacity building of the communities will be done regarding the developed technologies for spinning, carding and combing for wool processing.

Replication of project activities

Yes, there are various possibilities of replication of this project among other pastoral communities which might not or might live in different regions. However the process of wool production is a lengthy one and requires a lot of patience. This five step process of wool development ? Collection and cleaning, Separation by its colour and length, sliver making, spinning and hank making and Weaving throws a lot of potential in replication in different contexts.

Project Results

Organized 157 Rabari women to initiate spinning. There is a higher demand coming from community women regularly. We have put all the systems in place to record systematized data that is being generated through various activities of the project.

Keeping the spinning in hands of Rabari women groups has been proved to be very effective approach. It has managed to increase the income of a pastoralist family as well as empower the women as they income will go in their hands.

The wool processing (combing and carding) was well understood during the project period. The Ashford hand carding machines are used by the spinners and there is lot of possibility to increase the spinning with such machines. We are in talk with local manufacturers for simplified versions of such machines.

The awareness about climate issues, their effect on pastoral culture and economy and the mitigation of such issues through various activities remain satisfactory.
