Hangsadum and Hangkhone villages are located in Khong district, Champasack province. The main occupation of villagers is fishery and doing agricultural productions to support the family member. In the between of these two villages? location, there is the Mekong Irrawaddy Dolphin that is the only one place in Lao PDR where has the species are nearly extinct. The fresh-water dolphin is the mammal species, which live in Mekong River and it is on the red list of endangered species that must be urgent to conserve. However, the fishing is a way of the local people in the area that is the threat, which has become the challenge for the dolphin conservation in the past 20 years, there were 40 dolphins and after that it become decreased day by day because of the ambient environmental change and people fishing with fishing gears such as dynamite, gun and fishnet, etc. not properly used, with no existing rule and regulation enforcement. Therefore, the idea to have this kind of project will be implemented together with local authorities aim to identify and expand the areas of Dolphin conservation, set up protected dolphin committee and the rules as well as raising awareness to the local peoples how to conserve the dolphin for new generation and to support eco-tourism in the long run to sustainable development.
