Promoting fish processing using solar energy and smoking kiln technologies for sustainable natural resources utilization in Karonga and Nkhatabay districts
Fish smoking is among the major causes of deforestation. Deforestation has undermined forests? important climate change mitigation role of acting as carbon sink. Therefore, the project is designed to achieve 3-fold benefits of reducing deforestation, fish value addition and reducing fish postharvest losses through use of solar tent driers and fuel efficient smoking kilns that will utilize rice husks fire briquettes. Products processed in a solar tent dryer are of higher quality (nutritional and consumer safety) compared traditional processing methods. The technologies proposed emphasize the need for eco-friendly, affordable fish processing methods that will add value and increase economic returns through promotion of enterprise development in inland fisheries. Enterprise development provides an alternative or a window of opportunity for the fishery dependent populations through value addition and product diversification. The proposed project sites are also major rice producers, creating a sustainable potential of using rice husks as fire briquettes in the smoking kilns.
Objectives
-To promote value addition of fish using solar energy technologies.
-To promote value addition using fuel efficient smoking kilns that will utilize rice husks fire briquettes
-To develop fish entrepreneurial clubs and promote fish market value chain.
