Sustainable Forest Development through Promoting Income Generation Activities in Arsi Nagelle Woreda, Gonde Gurate Kebele
The proposed project Awade Malka Hida Natural Resource Conservation management is located in Central Rift Valley, Arsi Nagelle District, and West Arsi zone Zone of Oromia National Regional State. The overriding problem of the area is degradation of natural resources; specially the deforestation contributing to erosion and siltation of Lake Langano through Land degradation cased due to anthropogenic actions the Dadaba and Awade River leads to reduction of productivity contributing to poverty. On the other hand population pressure led the dwellers to mismanagement the natural resources of the area especially in search of expanding land for agricultural purposes, grazing, for construction fuel wood needs. Due to those factors the soil fertility of the area has declined leading to siltation and causing flood hazard, frequent drought and food insecurity. In order to address problems the community of the kebele organized itself into Community Based Organization (CBO) and got legal entity from the district Cooperative Office to rehabilitate of the severely degraded 24.24ha of land. The CBO closed the area from human and livestock interferences to enhance natural resources regeneration.
The implementation strategies include fostering collaboration and partnership with concerned government sector offices, capacity building of the target groups by conducting trainings, field demonstration. Ensuring the involvement of women in the overall project activities through gender mainstreaming will be given prior attention and will be done relentlessly. Still there are some internal and external risks and assumption may influence this project. Some of those risks are limitation capacity of CBO members, Due to work load at district level, technical personnel?s strong monitoring and follow-up of project activities, community participations and climate related problem may not be undertaken.
