Freeing fish migration routes into Shkodra lake through removal of old Fyke nets
Freeing fish migration routes into Shkodra lake through removal of old Fyke nets
Shkodra Lake lies on the border of Albania and Montenegro, the largest lake in the Southern Europe. It is named after the city of Shkodër in northern Albania. It is abundant in fish, especially in carp, bleak and eel. Of the 34 native fish species, 7 are endemic to this lake. The lake is connected to the Adriatic through Buna River.
Over the years wrong practices of uncontrolled placements of fyke nets has resulted in accumulation of many such nets in the area where the lake funnels into the Buna River. Fyke nets are bag-shaped nets which are held open by hoops. Such nets have to be removed since they can damage local fish population in their migration routes. The project will be implemented by the local fisherman cooperative.
