Developing Citizen Science for Improved Terrestrial Management
Developing Citizen Science for Improved Terrestrial Management
Huge acres of barren land and dirt road maintenance is causing massive deposition of sediment into the watershed and coastal areas where communities are experiencing it?s negative impact. The project goal is to drive behavioral change and social change by training the communities of Ngaremlengui and Aimeliik to be able to identify indicators of soil erosion and sedimentation and have the skills and knowledge to change the conditions and reduce the threats contributing to degraded land. More importantly, be practicing behaviors that prevent unnecessary forest clearing without mitigation, reduce forest fire, and farming practices which creates conditions for increased soil erosion and sedimentation.
The project is an upscale from the Ngarchelong project- having the Ngarchelong women provide on hands training on soil erosion mitigation and forest protection to the women of Ngaremlengui and State workers of Aimeliik . In addition, the project aims to create a space for Palau wide community dialogue towards improved terrestrial management integrating biodiversity and ecological protection in development.
