Project Results
1. Key Outputs, Outcomes, and Innovations
What were the key outputs that make your project stand out and were critical to the success of the project?
Our Project touches the mentality of the people and reinforces the confidence of the local community on the importance of natural resource for environmental health and food security. We work with local farmers to build capacity through informal ways of direct dialogue and training on multi-storey cocoa business and the methods of integrated pest management in farms.
We have carried out an assessment of the trade in Thaumatoccocus danielli in 10 towns in Osun State and we also did a study of the trade in Lagos. We have commenced efforts to build a network of traders in T.danielli leafs in Osun State where we have a record of an estimate of 3500 women involved in the trade.
Our intention to erect market stalls in town markets was found expensive for the level of the project. Traders advised that we should help build capacity first and that operations of sales of leaves are more convenient in already available sections of the market system available in places. We agreed on the need for participation of trader groups to be involved in building market stalls so as to build the already available network of cooperative society which is growing structurally and financially.
Policy Impacts
? In what ways has your initiative advocated for policy change?
? Has there been success in influencing policy at what level (community, institution, municipal, regional) and what were the critical factors that made that success possible?
? What have been the barriers and the successes removing these barriers?
? Have there been any regional (sub national) or national policies or laws that were enacted or changed because of your project?
? (Biodiversity specific) Has your community engaged in the planning, implementation, or review of National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plans?
? (Climate Change specific) Has your community engaged in the planning, implementation, or review of the National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs)?
Our Project has created a reliable platform for better land use and land use planning at the community level. We have engaged women, youth, and elders to ensure integration of at least 25% trees in all cocoa agroforestry plots. We have also agreed to integrate at least 20% of T.danielli as undergrowth herbs in cocoa agroforests.
Our Project has contributed to calls by the Government of Osun State and the former Federal Minister of Agriculture to recommend local leaf for wrapping local food rather than using nylon and plastics.
Traditional rulers have joined the voice at Local Government level to support sustainable agroforestry practices as a way of curbing deforestation.
All the above in one way or the other contribute to recommend actions in the National Adaptation Programmes of Action on climate change (NAPAs)
We engaged directly with the Ayedire South Local Government, Osun State, Nigeria on the implementation of the Project. We also had advocacy meetings and information sharing with the Ministry of Environment, Osogbo, Osun State, Ayedaade Local Government and Iwo Local Government.
Based on the success recorded for winning the Equator Award, the project made a presentation of a proposal to the National Council on Environment for the adoption of integrated agroforestry as an approach for reducing deforestation and the recognition of the production of T.danielli in forest areas of Nigeria as an integral solution for curbing deforestation. The proposal was accepted by the National Council of Environment in 2019.
Our Project collected materials for the production of a video documentary in form of video clips from our Farmer Field School sessions, training and capacity building workshops, advocacy workshops, radio jingles, meetings of women market traders. During the process of material collection for video documentary, we received the news of our success in winning the prestigious Equator Award by UNDP-Equator Initiative. Part of our winning efforts was to ensure participation of beneficiaries and communities in the development of a video documentary. We concentrated on this efforts and our communities and beneficiaries fully participated in the development of the documentary prepared by the UNDP/ GEF-SGP/ Equator Initiative . We still have the copies of video clips and copies of materials collected during the initial documentary preparation period. We are proud to be fully involved in the Equator Initiative advocacy and awareness video.
? What would you say are the key innovations that make your project stand out and were critical to successful environmental, social, and economic outcomes?
We embrace a joint problem identification process and carried out our capacity building inputs through direct on-the ? field analysis of challenges on the environment. Experience sharing as a way of solution finding made community members and farmers as well as market traders to have confidence in our approach. We reached consensus that our methods are not a quick fix-it measure but a gradual transformation method that will enable joint learning and mutual benefits.
Our Farmer Field School sessions provided a platform of interaction, learning and experience sharing. We have achieved skill development through this medium and farmers confirmed improved management practices in their daily farm and forest management operations.
? How did you engage the local community and key stakeholders to participate in the project?
Direct contact
Meetings and consensus building using problem tree analysis
We presented a set of target objectives of our Project and allow community members and farmers group to fix our intervention logic. We have decided to be always with community with our field staff involved in regular monitoring and discussion on success and challenges.
? What were the principal positive aspects of the project? The principal aspect of the project is its linkage to cultural nutrition value and its contribution to promotion of rural economy.
? What were the principal deficiencies of the project? The principal deficiencies of the Project is the inability to incorporate to incorporate long term research components into soil characteristics of T.danielli in forest landscapes. This will be considered in future project efforts
? Products generated by the project: (Please list all the products generated by the project, give brief description on what, how, why, when and their uses. Give the quantity and quality of the products and any other useful information about the products. Please provide high resolution photographs of these products)
The Project at this level did not generate any product specifically. It is a pilot scheme which promoted advocacy and integrates trading with agricultural production. The project serve as a platform for generating new trade products such as disposable leaf plate and othe materials from T. danielli and related agroforestry products as a follow up to this first level of project intervention
? List and discuss any innovative idea, product, process developed during this project? Following some of the results of the project and its acceptance by local community beneficiaries, the project developed an application to the UNDP Equator Initiative. The project?s innovation and ideas competed with other applications across the World and was selected as one of the 21 best ideas for promoting climate change solutions and opening new trade initiatives . The Projecct also adopted the idea of farmer field school system which enabled direct approach to knowledge sharing and development for integrated cocoa agroforestry as a method for reducing deforestation in the rainforest zone of Nigeria.
