ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE DRY LAND OF LONGIDO DISTRICT IN NORTHERN TANZANIA THROUGH LIVESTOCK FATTENING AND CULTIVATION OF FODDER.
Context:
Climate change is affecting pastoral communities in a way that they are forced to destroy environment as well as range lands degradation. Pastoralists are forced to enter into the forest reserves during dry seasons to search for pasture and water. This tendency has negatively affected the environment and conservation initiatives. This project is therefore aiming at supporting livestock production by improving livestock health through production of forage and livestock (cattle) fattening practices in Longido District.

Longido District is one of the six districts in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. It was created in 2007 from part of Monduli District. The administrative seat is the town of Longido. The Longido District is administratively divided into sixteen wards
Project?s primary objective:
The project is aiming at supporting livestock production by improving livestock health through production of forage and livestock (cattle) fattening practices in Longido District.
Project Purpose:
Increased production through cattle fattening
Implementation strategies:
? Increase income of the local community through livestock fattening
? Conserve the forest by reseeding of drought resistant pasture species
? Train local communities on livestock fattening in order to raise income
? Improvement of livestock market prices
? Establishment of two livestock keepers cooperatives
Project sustainability strategies:
? Through establishment of the two livestock keepers cooperatives, it is anticipated that the project will continue to work even when the project funds have finished as project beneficiaries will continue to enjoy cattle fattening by increasing income for their livelihoods,
