ENABLING ADVOCACY OF QUALITY SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC WORKMANSHIP
Context:
The business case for solar photovoltaic (Solar PV) in Africa is stronger than ever thanks to rapidly declining technology costs. It is estimated that installed costs for power generated by solar PV projects in Africa have decreased as much as 61% since 2012. These costs reductions, coupled with vast solar potential on the continent, present a huge opportunity for Africa to increase energy access, improve quality of life and mitigate climate change. The increase in Solar PV installations comes with the proliferation of sub-standard solar PV products. A study by Confederation of Tanzania Industry (CTI) in 2015 revealed that 50% of electrical equipment sold in Tanzania is substandard. This includes solar PV equipment as well. Therefore, it is important to train solar installers and users to identify quality solar products and avoid substandard products. This project intends to publish a booklet in Kiswahili, which will guide installers and users to address the challenge of substandard solar products.
About the Proponent:
REZA is based in Zanzibar. It was established and registered in 2015. Its main objective is to promote wider use of renewable energy in Tanzania for improved quality of life and Climate Change mitigation. So far REZA and partners has already trained more that 2,500 solar installers around the country.
Project?s Primary Objective:
To improve quality of solar PV in the country by building the capacity of solar installers and users to recognize quality solar PV and identify sub-standard products
Implementation Strategies:
1. Publish a guide booklet in Kiswahili to guide solar PV installers and users on recognizing quality products
2. Facilitate stakeholders? training to strengthen understanding of the contents of the booklet and code of conduct for solar PV
Project Sustainability Strategies:
Training will be provided at a fee. This fee will be used for re-printing of more booklets
Anticipated project results:
? Increased understanding of solar PV technology, which will lead to wider adoption
? Reduction in the sale of sub-standard solar PV products
? Wider adoption of quality solar PV products will increase reliability of solar services in the country
