IMPROVING COMMUNITY?S LIVES AND CONSERVATION EFFORTS AMONG VULNERABLE GROUPS IN MITI MIREFU VILLAGE, WEST KILIMANJARO.
Context:
Climate change has brought many challenges in the modern world especially on climate reliant sectors such as agriculture, water, livestock and energy. Rural women and youth are particularly disadvantaged; and this will continue to have detrimental effect on Tanzania?s health, economy, and environment. This project provides rural residents of Miti Mirefu village with a clean, practical and convenient way to meet their cooking and boiling energy challenges. Furthermore, the new energy technology contributes to the mitigation of household air pollution through the use of affordable clean cooking stoves. This will potentially realize long term positive effects on the community?s health and the environment. The project also contributes to poverty alleviation by reducing fuel costs and increasing their daily income through the proposed Income Generating Activities (IGAs). The longer term impact of the project will be the improved conservation efforts through reduced pressure on the nearby resources such as forests or wildlife. This project will entirely be owned and managed by the community themselves and they will be actively involved in monitoring project progress.
