EXPLOITING THE POTENTIAL OF SAW DUST AND BACKYARD WOODLOTS FOR IMPROVED HOUSEHOLDS COOKING ENERGY IN NAMWAI VILLAGE: An affordable energy for reduced environmental degradation in West Kilimanjaro Ecosystem.
Context:
It goes without saying that lack of access to clean, efficient and affordable energy sources limits socio-economic prospects among poor people in many rural parts of Tanzania and consequently development. It is alarming to see that energy situation is set to change very slowly over the next 2years a phenomenon that will likely to retard the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Though households require energy for various uses, cooking is one area that has received less attention by international and local communities. The proposed project therefore will enhance efficient energy efficient household cooking stoves and backyard woodlots for sustainable forest management and environmental conservation so as to reduce the consumption of fuel wood and generating fuel wood from backyard woodlots.

About the proponent:

Agro-Environmental Conservation for Economic Change Organization (ACOECO), is a registered nongovernmental organization registered in 2016 by the Ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children with registration number 00NGO/0847under Non-Governmental Act, 2002. The organization is legally registered to operate in Tanzania Mainland in environmental conservation and community development projects.

Project?s Primary Objective:
The main objective of the project is to enhance adequate access to energy efficient cooking technology and fuel wood through exploiting the potential of saw dust and enhanced backyard woodlots.

Project?s purpose:
Enhancing adequate access to energy efficient cooking while improving the livelihoods of the Namwai people.

Project specific objectives:
? Enhancing the use of energy efficient and wood saving cooking stoves;
? Training of group A on making wood saving stoves and group B on woodlot management;
? Establishing a workshop shed for making and selling of energy efficiency cooking stoves;
? To support the villagers to establish and managing tree nurseries and backyard woodlots
Implementation Strategies:
? Calling for a Project inception meeting in order to introduce the project to the community and drafting agreement on how the project will be executed smoothly in the village
? Conducting a Baseline Survey to identify the needs and mapping the project beneficiaries who will be manning the day to day operation of the project
? Conduct training to women and men groups on how best they can use the efficient cooking stoves
? Offering stoves and tree seedlings to the identified vulnerable households both men and women
? Establishing tree nursery so that people reduce pressure of cutting down trees from natural forests
? Formulation of wood saving stove workshop centre that will be producing stoves for the entire village

Project Sustainability Strategies:
? Financial sustainability: The community will manage a workshop for making efficient cooking stoves after training from SIDO and this will be an income-generating activity to their village and this will create a sustainable use of stoves even beyond the Namwai village
? Environmental sustainability: Through tree planting program, many trees will be planted to reduce pressure from adjacent natural forests and also the use of cooking stoves will ease down the rate of deforestation.
