CAPACITY BUILDING IN PRODUCTION OF QUALITY FISH SEEDS AND FEEDS
AND PROVISION OF EFFECTIVE OUTREACH SERVICES FOR IMPROVED
AQUACULTURE FOR FISH FARMERS AROUND LAKE VICTORIA.
Context:
Aquaculture has now expanded from being almost negligible to fully comparable with capture production in terms of feeding people and improving their livelihood through income generation and employment. In Tanzania, aquaculture started way back since 1949 with experimental work on the pond culture at Korogwe in Tanga and Malya in Mwanza. However, since its inception, a number of challenges have been encountered. For instance, lack of proper management, inadequate technology and infrastructure, drought and human population growth. However, the major earmarked challenges that hinder the rapid expansion of aquaculture in Tanzania are the unavailability of quality seeds, feeds, and inadequate technical knowhow on fish undertakings. This proposed project will strengthen the capacity of the TAFIRI fish seeds and feeds production infrastructure to improve its outreach programs to the community.
About the proponent:
Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) - Mwanza center is a government owned national fish research institute. Apart from dealing with researches, the institute is charged with the task of accelerating the fishing agenda and responsibilities of developing aquaculture activities through production of quality seeds and feeds to fish farmers in Mwanza region.
Project?s primary objective:
The primary objective is to improve aquaculture productivity through production of quality fish seeds and feeds, and increase the technical capacity of fish farmers in fish farming practices in Tanzania.
Implementation strategies:
? Establishment of a modern fish seeds and feeds production unit as follows:.
- construction of 3 new ponds
- modification of Hatchery plant to support production of Tilapia fingerlings
- Procurement and installation of pelleting machine and its accessories.
? Provision of frequent and the best outreach programmes to farmers? e.g.
- conducting of trainings at the sites of fish farmers
Project sustainability strategies:
? Integration of important stakeholders into the implementation of the project and fish farmers in lake zone
? Fish generates income, which will be used to sustain project activities
Anticipated project results:
? Improved institutional capacity on production of quality fish seed and feeds
? Increased production quantity and affordable fish seed and feeds to fish farmers
? Increased capacity of TAFIRI in outreach programs
? Increased aquaculture production to offset the deficit from capture fisheries
