PILOT PROJECT IN HYDROPONIC FARMING FOR INCREASED ANIMAL FODDER PRODUCTION - MOSHI, KILIMANJARO REGION
Context:
Limited availability of fodder for livestock in villages around KVTC and other villages in Kibosho Division is a big challenge and a major limitation for youth and many households to engage in intensive livestock keeping as a gainful employment. A significant number of households in Kibosho Division keep some livestock such as dairy cattle, indigenous cattle, goats, sheep and pigs to supplement their incomes and for consumption. Due to dire need for animal fodder, some villagers in the areas bordering the reserved forest around the slopes of Mountain Kilimanjaro have often found themselves in trouble with KINAPA because they sneak their cattle into the forest for grazing. This project will therefore help KVTC to start practical training of students in hydroponic farming as part of the modules offered in the agriculture and the animal husbandry courses.
