INCOME RESTORATION OF DEGRADED FISH BREEDING SITES AND CATCHMENT OF LAKE NYASA THROUGH IMPROVED ALTERNATIVE FISHING TECHNOLOGY FOR RURAL RESILIENCE
Context:
Lake Nyasa is one of the African Great Lakes. It covers 30,800 sq. km. The Lake is shared with Malawi. The lake?s basin represents important national and regional water source for economic activities. They include transport, fisheries, domestic and industrial water supply and agriculture. The Lake?s ecosystem supports large mammals including hippos and an extensive range of bird species. Over 90% of the 800 fish species are endemic to the Lake. This represents the largest accumulation of endemic vertebrates in the entire world. However, the resource-rich Lake is facing a number of threats, which if they are not addressed, they may cause the untimely demise of the Lake. Key threats include: land degradation, deforestation and unsustainable fishing practices. This project attempts to address all the three threats through wide dissemination of conservation education. The project also attempts to redress the unsustainable fishing challenge through promoting alternative fishing technology.
About the Proponent:
RECCO is based at Peramiho in Songea and Mbaba Bay in Nyasa District. It was established and registered in June 2015. Its principle objective is to improve livelihood of local communities around Lake Nyasa for sustainable resource utilization. Through the proposed project, RECCO in collaboration with Nyasa district council will train the local communities on how to strike a balance between conservation and livelihood issues in their day to day income generation undertakings.
Project?s Primary Objective:
To restore fish breeding sites and catchment of Lake Nyasa through improved alternative fishing technology.
Implementation Strategies:
1. Dissemination of conservation education to four Lake Nyasa adjacent villages. Selected villages are those with higher incidences of land degradation along the Lake Shores and rampant cases of unsustainable fishing
2. Promotion of deep water fishing technology
3. Promotion of fish farming (Aqua-culture)
4. Tree planting to rehabilitate degraded areas
Project Sustainability Strategies:
? Project activities will be owned by village based existing groups, which is critical for sustainability of project results
? Linkage of project activities with income generation will provide incentive for sustainability
? Community learning on the balance between conservation and livelihood will provide a constant reminder to the local communities to refrain from degradation malpractices in and outside the Lake
