EMPOWERING TANGA LOCAL COMMUNITIES THROUGH DEVELOPING MILKFISH AQUACULTURE PONDS
Context:

The proposed project earmarks milkfish to have potential for aquaculture in Tanzania since it is practiced in coast areas particularly in Pangani and Mkinga Districts as a prerequisite for diversifying economic activities in Tanga coast districts. Pond aquaculture for milkfish in Tanga would be proper to reduce the current fishing pressure and improve community livelihoods. Capacity building and awareness rising to locals will be earmarked as key interventions to ensure sustainability of the developed aquaculture projects. This project is designed to involve CBOs from the beginning in order to mainstream project activities into to their daily IGA activities hence giving them sense of ownership. Ownership of the project by the people through their CBOs shall stimulate their desire to support and participate fully in the proposed project.

Project?s Primary Objective:

The project aims to develop aquaculture ponds in Mkinga and Pangani Districts as a way of economically empowering local communities particularly women.

Implementation Strategies:

? Train local community on aquaculture
? Conduct baseline study to assess the situation prior to project implementation
? Construct Milk fish pond aquaculture

Project Sustainability Strategies:

? Involvement of local communities and other development stakeholders at all levels of implementation
? Introducing of Income generation activities through constructed fish ponds
? Project information sharing to community itself and other stakeholders

Anticipated Project Impact:

? Improved people?s livelihood as a result of income generation accrued from the constructed fish ponds
? Improved people?s nutrition particularly women and children
? Increased fish population in a natural provided aquatic environment as a result of reduced fishing pressure
