Income generating interventions for biodiversity conservation and improvement of Community Livelihoods in Mvomero District
Context:

For quite some times now, Nguru Mountains have been undergoing a continued environmental degradation mainly by the communities living around the mountain slopes. Environmental degradation leads to poverty and poverty is a habitual cause of environmental degradation. This project therefore aims at breaking the chain of relationship between poverty and environmental degradation.

About the proponent:

Erick Memorial Foundation for Education and Rehabilitation for Disabled (EMFERD), is a registered NGO to operate within Tanzania Mainland, which is non for profit, non religious, and gender free organization; The inspiration to establish Erick Memorial Foundation was started in 2003 but registered in 2011 with number NGO. 4606, after the death of Erick Samamkalami, the son of founder Mama Bahkita, who had multiple disabilities caused by Cerebral Palsy and Meningitis fever. The Organization is aiming at offering support in terms of quality education, health, rehabilitation and general welfare of persons with disabilities, and that their rights are respected in and outside Tanzania


Project?s primary objective:

The primary objective of the project is to minimize the village communities around Nguru Mountains from carrying out activities which leads to environmental degradation
Project Purpose: Introduce development project that target towards supporting activities which help to alleviate or reduce absolute poverty among communities living around the slopes of mountain Nguru.

Implementation strategies:

? Holding 4 awareness raising meeting about the project in 4 villages
? Formation of tree planting groups
? Procurement of 100 commercial beehives and its beekeeping gears
? Training of group members on beekeeping and tree nursery establishment
? Close monitoring of project outputs in all 4 villages

Project sustainability strategies:

Sale of honey and bee wax will ensure project sustainability as it will move from a voluntary project to becoming a business that will attract many people on board and also produce a lot of money in the coming few years. Money obtained will be used to expand activities that aim at conserving environment like establishing of cooking stoves to the communities
