VALUE ADDITION TO YOUTH HONEY PRODUCTION, PROCESSING AND
PRODUCTION PROJECT.
Context:
Mlele district in Katavi region is well endowed with natural forests. 60% of the district total area is covered by the biodiversity rich miombo forests. The expansive forest cover provides conducive environment for beekeeping. Therefore, it is not surprising that beekeeping is one of the key livelihoods enhancing activities for the people of Mlele. The other activities are agriculture and mining. However, beekeeping and honey production has up to now been poorly done. This has been producing poor and unhygienic honey, which has been fetching low prices and failed to create transformative impact to the people of Mlele. The objective of this project is to support over 4,000 youths with modern beekeeping and honey production skills to modernize beekeeping industry in Mlele district. This initiative will increase income levels through favorable process and frog-leap livelihood conditions of the Youths in Mlele district.
About the Proponent:
The proponent is a new district in the new region of Katavi. To unlock the economic potential of beekeeping in the new district, the proponent invested Tshs. 71 million to establish a Honey Production and Processing Centre at Mlele. In addition, the district established a network of beekeepers across the district. Support is now requested for the procurement of honey processing machinery; installation of water and electricity systems and training so that the honey production and processing centre will become operational.
Project?s Primary Objective:
Adding value to the traditional beekeeping practices in Mlele district for environmental conservation and livelihoods enhancement.
Implementation Strategies:
1. Procure and install honey processing (refining, packaging, labeling) machinery
2. Install electricity from the grid
3. Install water system
4. Provide modern beekeeping skills to beekeepers
5. Train selected youths to run the honey processing centre
