CONSOLIDATION OF SCHOOL WASH PROJECT IN MOSHI MUNICIPALITY IN KILIMANJARO REGION
CONSOLIDATION OF SCHOOL WASH PROJECT IN MOSHI MUNICIPALITY IN KILIMANJARO REGION
Context:

In 2015, UNDP supported 10 schools in Moshi District to improve water supply and environment sanitation at the respective schools. The project was inaugurated early this year 2017. Students mentioned the following results from the projects: (i() Increased availability of water at schools (ii) Due to expanded latrine facilities, waiting time to visit a toilet per student has been reduced from 30-40 minutes to less than 5 minutes. (iii) Students have adopted the habit of washing hands after each toilet visit (iv) Girl students now attend school even during their menstruation periods because of increased privacy at latrines and improved supply of water (v) school performance has improved from an examination pass rate of around 40% before the project, to around 80% after the project leading to a conclusion that WASH was critical factor for successful learning at school.

While improved sanitary services have improved on the part of students, teachers are still suffering by using old and dilapidated toilets that are not connected to water supply. Teachers toilers in their ruinous form remain an eye sore to the improved environment sanitation around the 10 demo schools for WASH. The objective of this project is to consolidate the school WASH projects for the 10 schools by improving water supply and latrine facilities so that all the 10 schools present a full demo WASH environment for students and teachers.
