Consolidating of Tupendane Fish Farming Project, Magu District
Consolidating of Tupendane Fish Farming Project, Magu District
Project?s Primary Objective:

To strengthen conservation of Lake Victoria basin in Magu District through training and demonstration of aquaculture practices for wider adoption by Lake adjacent local communities.

Implementation Strategies:

1. Consolidation of demo fish ponds through strengthening water pumping system by integrating it with solar energy
2. Streamlining of demo fish ponds by controlling leakages through laying down of pond liners
3. Renovation of water outlet and inlet structures
4. Establish demo plots for vegetables that are fed to fish ponds by using the new practice of hydroponics
5. Increase conservation awareness and concern through stakeholders training for local communities adjacent to Magu shore line.

Project sustainability strategies:

1. Fish ponds will yield catch after every six months. This will give the group operating income
2. Vegetables will be grown for fish. Surplus vegetables will be sold to give income to the group
3. Production of fish feeds will generate income for the group on sustainable basis
4. Government extension staff will provide technical knowledge and skills all the time

Anticipated project Results:

1. 25km of Lake shore line will be conserved through Beach Management Units (BMUs) in the local area
2. The project will transform into a centre of excellence for aquaculture whereby youths from around the area will be visiting periodically to refresh their fishing and conservation skills
3. It is anticipated that fishing pressure in the Lake will be decreased as a total of 30 smallholder fishermen will adapt to aquaculture instead of fishing in the open lake.
4. Conservation skills and knowledge will be impacted to about 500 smallholder fishermen in the local area. This will improve the Lake shore line, water quality and promote sustainable fishing practices
5. Group Members, who are HIV positive, will be assured of nutritious food of fish and vegetables. They will also be assured of income part of which they would use as fare when they go to the regional hospital to re-stock anti-retroviral drugs.
