ENHANCING CLIMATE CHANGE RESILIENCE STRATEGIES TO THE MOST VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES IN LONGIDO DISTRICT.
Project?s primary objective
The main objective of this project is to ensure improved livelihood and provide coping and adaptation strategies and mitigation measures towards climate change to livestock keepers as well as farmers in Engikaret, Kiserian and Ngereyani villages through training communities to fabricate affordable and effective alternative energy facility as well as, alternative sources of income generation
Project?s purpose:
To contribute towards reduction of the cultural, technical and economic barriers to climate change adaptations to both farmers and pastoralist communities in target project villages in Longido District council
Project specific objectives:
? To convey knowledge and skills through training on climate change science and its impacts on the environmental and community livelihood
? To promote alternative income generating activities that are sustainable and environmentally friendly
? To promote and support simple low-cost alternative energy saving stoves technologies in order to reduce the consumption of forest dependent energy sources
? To promote and support house hold tree planting particularly fruits and firewood trees (fast growing) as a method of income generation, conserving and managing the environment and combating drought in the area
Implementation strategies:
? Baseline survey to establish benchmark situation prior to project commencement
? Conduct sensitization and training seminars on climate change and its impacts and environmental conservation
? Support households to develop local adaptation plans and non-timber income generating activities ? focusing on local poultry, bee-keeping and efficient stove manufacturing
? Training on adoption of fuel-wood saving technologies (6 days Training) for 60 village members
? Training community and practical demonstration on establishment of 3tree nurseries in three villages
? Facilitate community afforestation of indigenous plant species where at least 3,000 trees will be planted
Project sustainability strategies:
? Community-based institutions: A key sustainability strategy is to work with existing groups involved in climate change adaptation and other conservation activities in each village. This is one of the most effective ways of sustaining projects? benefits, enabling handing over responsibilities to the ?local host?. Local village groups play a crucial role in sensitizing mobilizing community involvement, tracking progress in project implementation and in assessing the outcomes and impact of the project.
? A linkage with on-going initiatives and actors also ensures continuity of activities: This project will draw lessons from and build synergies with on-going conservation projects in the village, implemented by other organizations.

? Trained community members on how to construct RWH structures at household level as a temporary water scarcity option
? Reduction of barriers to Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency to a great extent through education training, community capacity building, supporting of local income generation activities, and alternative sources of energy technologies
? Achievement of Environmental conservation and increase of afforestation through tree planting campaign, and adoption of alternative energy sources.
? Poverty reduction through creation of community income generating activities
