BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF COMMUNITIES SURROUNDING SERENGETI ECOSYSTEM TO PRODUCE AND MARKET CHARCOAL BRIQUETTES FROM AGRICULTURAL AND SOMESTIC WASTES.
Project?s primary objective:
The main objective of the project is to assist village communities near NCA to reduce dependence
on wood charcoal and firewood by embarking on producing and marketing charcoal briquettes.
Project?s purpose:
? Replacing wood-based charcoal with sustainable (charcoal or firewood) as their primary
source of fuel.
Project specific objectives:
? To conduct a feasibility/pilot study on the potential of investing in producing and marketing charcoal briquettes
? To raise awareness on the importance of and demonstrate the procedures for making
charcoal briquettes to the target community
? To enhance the community's capacities to make available, on a commercial scale, sustainable charcoal briquettes to the target community
? Implementation strategies:
? Project inception meeting in order to introduce the project to the community and agreeing
how to go about it and developing project inception and pilot study report
? Conducting a pilot/feasibility study on the potential of investing in producing and marketing charcoal briquettes
? Conduct public meetings in target villages to raise people's awareness on the importance, production, uses and marketing of charcoal briquettes and selecting 3 villages out of 11
? Conducting a value chain analysis of wood charcoal and firewood including understanding
the size of wood charcoal and firewood demand in Karatu and nearby areas
? Conducting training on entrepreneurship/business skills and clarifying modality to engage in briquettes production
? Assisting target groups to solicit materials for the production of charcoal briquettes
? Engaging the target communities from 3 selected villages to full produce charcoal briquettes
for business
Project sustainability strategies:
This project is targeting existing income generating groups and individuals especially those involved
in charcoal business. This will be taken as a serious business to those inspiring to do business and make profit. This way the project will be sustained even when the project has be phased out in the next 12 months. SUA will follow through its regular monitoring to track the progress.
Anticipated project results:
? Best practices for initiating, producing and marketing charcoal briquettes are known
20 charcoal briquettes making demonstration projects at the community level established
? A list of key stakeholders who will be involved in project implementation, monitoring and evaluation is produced
? Checklists and questionnaires for data collection developed and tested
? Sufficient data collected and analysed
? Data analysed and results matrix, tables, charts and narrations about the areas' potentials
for investing and challenges in making and marketing charcoal briquettes developed
? A pilot study report developed and submitted to UNDP/GEF country office in Dar es salaam
