PROMOTING THE VOICE OF THE VOICELESS ON DEVELOPMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE ISSUES
Project?s Primary Objective:
Civil society and marginalized groups? voice and dialogue on development policy planning and implementation at sub-national level, promoted.
Implementation Strategies:
? Stakeholder mapping with special emphasis of groups whose livelihoods affected by climate change in rural or marginalized communities / other affected sub-national level areas
? Use of media to strengthen ?climate? knowledge among women and indigenous groups in rural Tanzania and convey their voice to the general public ? including Radio, Television and Social Media
? Piloting livelihood programs for climate-affected communities to adapt to climate change
Project Sustainability Strategies:
? Establishing civic platforms at district or community level (to facilitate dialogue among themselves and with government / other stakeholders) ? owned and run by communities;
? CODATz will mobilize CSOs, women and other marginalized groups to form multi-stakeholder cooperatives that will financially help mitigate the effects of climate change on their livelihoods (note that fully functional cooperatives not part of this project); and
? Use of existing dialogue and engagement platforms to present positions, demands, concerns and perceptions about various development policies and plans including those on climate change from district council assemblies to village meetings.
Anticipated Project Results:
(1) Increased climate knowledge to more than 300 persons (200 women and 100 indigenous groups) in targeted communities / areas;
(2) Voice of the marginalized communities in Tanzania is heard at the planning and implementation stage of ?climate smart? national strategies and plans;
(3) More participation of the target communities in adaptation interventions due to climate change
(4) Establishing communities of practice ? underserved women and indigenous communities: In three years? time, between 5 and 20 households establish projects aimed at financial self-sustenance or strengthened livelihood as a result of changing climate conditions. For example we could see a pastoralist household engaged in cocoa farming or a mixture of cocoa farming and domestic livestock keeping (to mitigate against the effects of climate change); and
(5) Community platforms (thus formed) effectively use media, existing structures or processes to voice their concerns, demands and / or positions.
