Conservation of Biodiversity Through Increasing Community Awareness and Capacity in Chicken Farming
Project goal:
To conserve biodiversity through cultivation of endemic chicken species which also has high monetary value - this could be a good alternative source of income for local community.
Project objective :
1. To increase local community?s awareness on nature conservation effort;
2. To increase community skill in making use of biodiversity to increase welfare?s;
3. To decrease the use of pesticide to control floral pest;
4. To utilize of households solid waste;
5. To develop an alternative feed for intensive chicken farming;
6. To maintain ecological food chain cycle;
7. To increase land fertility through the implementation of earth worm living media as fertilizer with the alternative to chemicals;
8. To conserve biodiversity - in this case : purity of local gene.
Activities to be carried out under the project :
1. Preparation.
a) CBO members identification and CBO strengthening;
b) Networking and establishing partnership;
c) Household waste processing for chicken?s food living media (earth worm, etc.);
d) Planting for green fodder
Chicken pens establishment.
2. Local training and education in the field.
a) Processing of alternative chicken feed;
b) Chicken pens structuring;
c) Selecting good quality seeds techniques.
3. Outreach Approach.
a) Publication and dissemination of ?sentul? chicken breeding techniques;
b) A potential implementation of the technique for other species.
4. Technical Assistance.
a) Alternative chicken food processing;
b) Chicken farming and breeding techniques.
5. Evaluation and Reporting.
Project Participants and/or beneficiaries :
1. Perhimpunan Kelompok Pelestari Hutan (POKLAN).
2. Community in Mekarmanik village, Cimenyan sub-district, Bandung, West Java.
Anticipated result of project :
1. Increased the participation of the community in nature conservation effort (in this case : biodiversity);
2. Cross breeding (inter species breed) practices to be decreased;
3. Increased in intensive chicken cultivation done by local community;
4. Increased in the usage of alternative feed in chicken farming;
5. Increased of the local community skill in processing alternative chicken feed;
6. Increased of the local community welfare through alternative income source development;
7. Increased in the utilization of household solid waste as living media for chicken feed;
8. Information media on cultivating sentul chicken with alternative feed as a way to attract
awareness to be developed;
9. Publication on ?sentul? chicken cultivation technique to be published
