Community Based Climate Change Mitigation Initiatives in Dharmapur VDC of Rautahat
Dharmpur VDC is one of the forest deficit VDCs in Rautahat. People have to travel 22 km to reach nearby forest to fetch firewood for cooking. More than 94% families use traditional fuel especially cow dung and firewood for fulfilling the household energy requirements. The use of cow dung as firewood has negative impact on agriculture productivity. People in Dharampur VDC are socially, economically and politically lagged behind. Agriculture and traditional livestock farming are their main occupation. But both the practices are unsustainable and unscientific. The traditional livestock farming does not produce sufficient to manage two square meals for their family members. The available land for agriculture and the grazing land are not sufficient for the increased number of population and cattle.
The project aimed to introduce renewable energy technologies, initiate organic farming and agroforestry in both the public and private land.
