Reduction of POPs and mercury from health sector of Nepal through awareness rising, helping CTFs set up & policy influences
Past projects on hospital waste management had successfully demonstrated that hospital waste management is possible with limited resources as well. The practices had been replicated in a couple of other hospital with support from various donors.
With the previous experience, the present project aimed to establish Centralised Treatment facilities for small and large environmentally sound management of healthcare waste in Chitawan district.
Bharatpur city of Chitwan is rapidly growing as Medical City of Nepal comprising of 3 Medical Colleges, 26 public, private, community Health Care Facilities. These facilities have some 3108 beds, 515 Doctors, 838 Nurses, 353 para-medics and 1122 admin/support staffs (Bharatpur Metropolitan Town Profile 2014/15). Additionally, there are about 100 Dental hospitals/clinics etc. comprising about 85 Doctor and 70 dental hygienist and assistants.
The project is aimed to address mainly the new POPs like PBDE coming from recycling products, unintentional POPs like Dioxin, Furan and Mercury from waste burning at health care setting as well as in open burning. In addition to these, the nexus between POPs, Chemicals and Climate Change needs to be understand in Nepalese context, thus it will not only help in disseminating the updated NIP of the country but also complement the ongoing MIA Mercury project of US$ 80000 worth. The proposed project will also contribute to implementation of the New NIP of Nepal in multiple prioritized plans of actions. It also help in reducing the generation of POPs such as dioxin, furan and toxic chemicals like mercury that ultimately contribute to not only the POPs Convention overall goal but also of Minamata Convention on Mercury, SDGs (1-end poverty, 3-Healthy lives, 4-Quality Education, 6-water and sanitation, 11- sustainable cities, 13- Climate Change, 15-Ecosystem and biodiversity and 17-Global partnership etc.). It also helps in realizing of Nepal GEF SGP Country Strategy for OP 6, 2015-2018 (Thematic-POPs and Geographic focuses-Chitwan-Makwanpur, (k). Public awareness and participation for elimination of Chemical and Persistent Organic Pollutants and its sources, including promotion of environmentally sound waste management practices in hospitals and other health care facilities. GEF 6 Strategic Priority and GEF SGP-Nepal's Strategic Initiatives especially on enhancing country capacity to implement MEAs, knowledge management, CSO-Government dialogue and upgrading of National Clearing House Mechanism etc.
