Mitigation of the Effects of Greenhouse Gases by Controlling Slash and Burn Practices and Promoting Climate Smart Livelihood initiatives
The increasing population of Churia of Arghakhanchi has forced cultivation of marginal and steep slopes, resulting in increased erosion and landslides. Increased flooding and the heavy loads of silt in flood water from this region have caused a widening of Banganga river banks along with erosion and loss of agricultural land and threatening the conservation in biodiversity of Jagadishpur Reservoir (Ramsar site) in Kapilvastu District. More than 80% households in Thada VDC of Arghakhanchi still depend on solid fuel for cooking and heating with the largest percentage of this group using wood from gathered from forests and private land. The smoke released by ?slash and burning? practices, forest fire and burning solid fuels such as wood, charcoal and dung are some of the causes of green house gas (GHG) emissions.
Thus the project aimed to reduce slash and burn agriculture with climate smart agriculture technologies and promoting improved cook stove
