Inovative Financial Mechanisms
A management plan has been produced whereby targets have been set for the community to achieve during the forthcoming years.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Although there have not been any job opportunities created from this initiative as the collection services are carried out by the government, it has significantly improved the visual aspect within the four sub-villages, supporting the local tourism industry. By promoting Satupaitea as a clean and environmentally aware district maintaining its natural beauty, tourists are attracted to visit as they know they will not be confronted with polluted beaches, roadsides and marine environments, often the case in other districts across Samoa. There is a sense of pride throughout the sub-villages now that they have taken the initiative to have ownership over the physical aspect of their land, with monthly clean-ups being carried out to maintain the environment. Many people have used this opportunity to learn about proper waste management, and this is being put into practice with the beautification of their own households and ensuring waste is separated and disposed of appropriately, ensuring no rubbish is dumped within their land, creating an eye-sore to themselves and passers-by. The project ensured all members of the community were included, installing two waste stands at the local school, aiming to promote proper waste management practices from an early age. This has been achieved, and there is an increasing understanding that children play a fundamental role in changing the status quo on waste management. Also, through working with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Natural Resources, the local hospital has been supported through implementing a waste management scheme.
