Voice of Livingstonia proposes to implement a project entitled ?Increased access to Environmental information: A gateway to meaningful environmental conservation and utilization? in Nkhatabay district for a period of two years from 2017-2019. The proposed project has been strategically designed to make effective and efficient contribution towards improved environmental conservation and utilization which harmonizes the organization?s efforts towards the fulfillment of the national rights and related local and international environmental related policies. The primary goal of the project is to promote biodiversity conservation and livelihoods improvement in the Tukombo-Kande landscape/lakescape of Nkhata Bay through radio programmes by 2019.
The proposed project shall be implemented through three main strategies which are; Facilitating grass root radio listening clubs. The clubs will be established to be discussing issues related to community based biodiversity-associated knowledge, climate change and low carbon energy access co-benefits and chemicals, heavy metals and wastes in their areas. The discussions will be documented and aired on Voice of Livingstonia Radio.
The other strategy will be Production and broadcasting of radio programme on GEF SGP OP6. The programmes from the clubs and other sources related to the programme as well as live coverage will be broadcasted on radio. Live broadcast will be featuring grass root clubs sharing knowledge on biodiversity, climate change and low carbon energy access co-benefits and chemicals, heavy metals and wastes.
Lastly, it is through facilitation of a radio program on CSO-Government Policy and Planning Dialogue. The radio programme will provide a platform for CSO and Government dialogue, featuring live discussions between CSOs and Government on biodiversity, climate change and low carbon energy access co-benefits and chemicals, heavy metals and wastes. The discussions will be aimed at isolated critical issues for policy and planning.
Objectives:
? Promote documentation of biodiversity-associated knowledge
? Promote community awareness and knowledge in climate change and low carbon energy access co-benefits
? Promote community awareness and knowledge with chemicals, heavy metals and wastes
? Improve livelihoods and sustainable development in the Tukombo-Kande landscape/lakescape of Nkhata Bay
Results:
i. Increased number of people having knowledge on biodiversity and sustainable (intergenerational) utilization of natural resources.
ii. Number of people having knowledge on climate change and low carbon energy access co-benefits and chemicals, heavy metals and wastes.
iii. Land area under forest cover increasing because of tree planting and promotion of natural regeneration of vegetation.
