Organic farming of local decorative plants varieties, An Effort to Conserve Biodiversity and Increase Community Welfare
Project goal:
Strengthening market potentials for local decorative plants (e.g. for cut flowers, pot pourri, garden flowers, etc.) in market, as an innovative effort to maintain biodiversity of local varieties.
Project objective:
1. To introduce and promote potential local varieties of cut flowers, as well as other decorative plants, in the commercial market, as a competitive local commodity.
2. To increase farmers? awareness on the potential of local varieties, which has not been explored previously.
3. To cultivate local varieties of cut flowers and decorative plants, to reinforce the supply of those plants and avoid scarcity in the local markets.
4. Together with local farmers, conserve biodiversity on local varieties of cut flowers and decorative plants.
5. To increase farmer?s welfare through providing broader options of planted plants which considered as potential products.
Activities to be carried out under the project :
1. Preparation.
a) Forming CBO (based on their specialties - cut flowers, decorative plants, pot plants farmers).
b) Identification on varieties and quantity of plants will be cultivated.
c) Demoplot setting.
d) Nursery preparation, to ensure supply of plants seeds.
e) Seeds distribution .
2. Local training and education in the field.
a) Farming and maintaining techniques (including the uses of organic fertilizer);
b) Land preparation for plants cultivation;
c) Nursery preparation/set-up by farmers;
d) Seeds planting in prepared lands with planting techniques (cycling the production to secure market?s demand and price);
e) Organic fertilizer uses;
f) Harvesting techniques.

a) Product promotion as a way to increase market awareness which could stimulate
demand.
b) CBO training in post-harvest and marketing techniques .

Anticipated result of project :
1. Increasing product quality produced by farmers which could compete with imported
products.
2. Increasing interest of farmers in planting and cultivating potential local varieties plants.
3. Increasing number of local varieties decorative plants cultivated by farmers.
4. Increasing demand/market for potential local varieties plants.
5. Increasing welfare of local farmers.
